A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure that provides access to the trachea (windpipe) through an incision in the front of the neck.  The result is an opening that is called the stoma.  A tracheostomy tube is a small curved tube that is inserted through the stoma and sealed inside the trachea so that a ventilator can be used to help the patient breathe. 

 

Tracheostomy tubes are available in different styles and sizes to meet the individual needs of any patient.

Simple gauze bandages (sponges) are used to cover the stoma to prevent contamination.  It is very important to keep the stoma site clean and free from infection.  In order to do this, the site must be cleaned and the bandages should be changed at least once a day.

 

At RQS, our Respiratory Therapists understand how to care for patients with tracheostomy tubes.  We are experienced in teaching caregivers and family members how to properly care for the tracheostomy tube.  We are also able to provide all of the supplies needed to properly maintain the airway.
